There are parts of the Lake District that the tourists haven't found yet. Ennerdale is one of them - a quiet valley on the western side of the National Park where the walks start from the front door, the pubs are a fifteen-minute stroll away in Ennerdale Bridge, and the only traffic you're likely to hear is a tractor.

The dining room next door is the kind of room that earns its keep at mealtimes and doubles as a second living space the rest of the time.

The ground floor also has a fourth room that works equally well as a study, a playroom or an extra bedroom - useful flexibility for a growing family or to welcome weekend guests.

The kitchen is full of farmhouse charm, with flagstone floors, cream shaker units, dark worktops and a back door that opens straight out to the garden. A separate utility room and a handy ground floor WC sit just off the kitchen, keeping the rest of the house feeling uncluttered.

It’s worth taking a moment on the way upstairs to take in the views - a sash window on the half-landing frames a view of the fells that will stop you in your tracks.

It takes around 15 minutes to walk to Ennerdale Bridge, where there’s The Gather café and a couple of pubs. Ennerdale Water - one of the quietest and most beautiful lakes in the National Park - is around twenty minutes walk to the east.

Bank House Farm is a proper family home in a part of the Lakes that rewards the people who find it - spacious, characterful and set in a valley that’s still something of a well kept secret.
