WARLEY HQ, A BRIEF HISTORY The site originally housed Warley Barracks, built in 1804-1805 and was used by the Essex Regiment until its closure in 1958. Many military buildings were demolished after the barracks closed, only a few (like the Essex Regiment Chapel and former officers’ mess) remain today. Circa 1964–1965, Ford Motor Company purchased approximately 21 acres of the former barracks site to build its UK and European headquarters. Designed by architect TP Bennett in a modernist style, deliberately styled after Ford’s global headquarters in Detroit, USA, the building became an iconic local landmark. For over 50 years, the site served as the centre of Ford’s UK operations, housing central offices for sales, marketing and support staff. The site was also well known locally for events such as Ford’s Annual Vehicle Enthusiasts’ Day, a celebration of classic and modern Ford cars. Fast forward to 2018 when Ford announced plans to close the site and relocate to nearby Dunton, staff began relocating in 2019, and the Warley offices were vacated later that year.
